MEDI150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Dietary Reference Intake, Nutrient Density, Literature Review
Document Summary
Diet planning principles: adequacy, balance, energy (kj) control, nutrient density, moderation, variety. Describe what nutrient reference values such as estimated average requirements (ear) and recommended dietary intake (rdi) represent. Includes more nutrients (35) for adults and includes about 22 life stages. Include some recommendations about intakes for optimal health (e. g. omega 3 fats) *human studies preferred, but sometimes animal data is used. How are rdis calculated: contain built in safety margins therefore do not equal individual requirements, recommended for different age, sex and life stage categories, generally rdi = mean + 2sd, designed to cover 97. 5% of population requirements. Problems with rdis: do not include all bioactive components that affect health (e. g. phytoestrogens) Inadequate scientific knowledge (e. g. distribution of requirements, different age groups: assume food sources not supplements. Nrv uses: food labelling, goal for individual dietary intakes, food supply planning, food product development, clinical dietetics, nutrition education, evaluation of foods, food regulation, not for assessing nutritional inadequacy in groups/populations.
