• Describes overarching ideas embedded in structures of power
• How of governing
o calculated means of directing how we behave, act
o organized practices (mentalities, rationalities, techniques) which subjects
are governed
• The way governments try to produce the citizen best suited to fulfil government
policies
• Technique and strategies by which society is rendered governable
• Not limited to state politics alone
o Includes wide range of control techniques
o Applies to a wide variety of objects
o From ones control of the self to the control of the population
• Develops a new understanding of power
o Power not only in terms of hierarchical, top-down power of state
o Also includes social control in disciplinary institutions (schools, hospitals,
etc.)
