Document Summary

Chapter 3 duration 1 (beat and meter) Demonstrated through exploring beat, meter and rhythm. Can be played on any instrument and your body. To explore the beat using movement or body percussion is an important element of the orff approach. Measurement into bars of stressed and unstressed beats. The measurement is indicated by a time signature at the beginning of the piece. A time signature: indicates how many beats will be in each bar. In poetry, meter is the basic rhythmic structure of a verse. The scansion of a poem is the analysis of its metrical structure. Also known as common time, this means there are 4 beats in a measure. For example, 4 quarter notes (= 4 beats) in a measure will have the count - 1 2 3 4. Another example is when there is a half note (= 2 beats), 2 eighth notes (= 1 beat) and 1 quarter note (=1 beat) in a measure.
