• Assignment Two
o The aim of this assignment is to help you develop an understanding of how children’s literature can be used
to support the teaching of reading.
o Students will be required to select an appropriate piece of children’s literature and use the text to plan
related reading activities linked to the Australian Curriculum: English.
o A rationale for using children’s literature to teach the reading.
o A mind map to represent the broad learning activities linked to the text.
o A description of the planned reading lesson ideas and how they link to the content of the Australian
Curriculum: English
o Part One
▪ Rationale (750 words) 15 Marks
• Discuss the importance of children’s literature in teaching reading
• Your rationale should discuss the importance of using children’s literature in teaching
reading. It should also outline what teachers need to consider when selecting an
appropriate text and you should justify your choice of text for this assignment.
o 3 Pages double spaced
o Look at the key points in guideline
o Make sure the rationale addresses all aspects of description
o Draw on a range of academic sources – including the text
o References in text and end of text referencing
• Justify text choice + things teachers need to consider
o Part Two
▪ Mind Map (10 Marks) A2 or submitted to Learnit
• demonstrating ‘how literacy appropriate to each learning area can be embedded in the
teaching of the content and processes of each learning area.’
o Shows broad planning ideas across different learning areas
o More detail in English LA (summary of pt 3)
o Planning ideas should link to the WAC – and should be based on literacy related
to the learning area.

o Students should select mind mapping software that enables them to represent their
ideas creatively. Mind Maps will be presented and discussed in the Week 9
tutorials.

▪ Reading lesson ideas and the Australian Curriculum (15 Marks)
• Using the chosen children’s literature as a base, plan a range of related reading activities
across the strands of Language, Literacy and Literature. Students should provide detailed
descriptions of the reading (English) lesson ideas and clearly show how they link to the
Australian Curriculum: English.
• Please note– you do need to plan across all three strands– it is not necessary to
address all sub-strands for the year level – Lesson ideas – not lesson plans!!– Lesson
ideas should focus on reading and viewing– First Steps! Phase of development??!!–
