students have the same message reinforced from different avenues. In order to better support emotional and
physical wellness in our students here in Australia we have adopted a safe schools framework that addresses
these issues using a multifactorial approach. There are several elements to the framework, which makes it able
to address issues both through policy and educational content.
- Todays lecture looks at the path we have taken here in Australian towards achieving this, as well as our current
approaches to dealing with bullying in schools.
National Safe Schools Framework (NSSF)
- All children have the right to live their lives free of the threat or the reality of violence. The impact on
children and young people of repeated victimisation can be devastating in the short term, and have
lifelong consequences. Increasingly, the Australian community is voicing its collective concern that bullying
and abuse, in all its forms, are unacceptable aspects of human relationships. Dr Brendan Nelson (2004)
- No single strategy will address all potential risks and create a supportive school environment
- Whole-school effort is needed that draws together specific policy, practices and strategies
- It is a culture and a philosophy underpinning all that happens in the school.
A Safe and Supportive School:
- The risk from all types of harm is minimised
- Diversity is values
- All members of the school community feel respected and included and can be confident that they will
receive support in the face of any threats to their safety or wellbeing
- Safe Schools Coalition Australia
- Aims to create a more inclusive school environment for same sex attracted, intersex and gender
diverse students, staff and families
- Provides resources, practical ideas and support to staff through the Safe Schools Hub eg. “ All of
Us “
