WHS – Medical imaging
Work health and safety lecture
3 main WHS issues in medical imaging:
Manual handling
- Patient may be required to be transferred to imaging table from hospital bed, ambulance
trolley
- Need to learn to manually handle patient correctly – so we minimise harm to patients and
ourselves. Need to understand biomechanics and basic concepts (base of support, centre of
gravity, mobility and stability muscles) to prevent injuries.
- Need to be aware of orthostatic hypotension – due to low blood pressure because they
were sitting for ages or lying in bed and they pass out when they try and stand up
Infection Control
- Preventing the spread of infection , an infection becomes a disease when it causes injury to
a host

Document Summary
Patient may be required to be transferred to imaging table from hospital bed, ambulance trolley. Need to learn to manually handle patient correctly so we minimise harm to patients and ourselves. Need to understand biomechanics and basic concepts (base of support, centre of gravity, mobility and stability muscles) to prevent injuries. Need to be aware of orthostatic hypotension due to low blood pressure because they were sitting for ages or lying in bed and they pass out when they try and stand up. Preventing the spread of infection , an infection becomes a disease when it causes injury to a host. For injection to occur need host , infectious microorganism , mode of transmission ( can be transmitted from outside body or inside body) and a reservoir ( site where organism can stay alive) Skin to skin contact eg. palpating an anatomic landmark to position a patient. Indirect contact eg. sneezing on or near a patient.
