Intro to Planar Xray continued
Tomography / Tomosysnthesis
• tomography acquires an image that is a section of anatomy
• CT also acquires sectional images however tomography sections are parallel to the tabletop
• tomography requires movement of the x-ray tube (and old tomography required movement of the
image plate)
Angiography
• image of contrast filled blood vessels (eg arteries)
• recording device is an image intensifier
• example of digital subtraction angiography (DSA)
Mammography
• mammography is a specialised application of planar x-ray
• it is a soft tissue (low subject contrast) examination with the need to see very fine detail
• the last planar x-ray modality to use digital capture methods
• previously dedicated mammo film and before that Xerography
Dental X-ray
• radiographs of the teeth and facial bones
• also now a digital modality
• intraoral and extraoral methods
• intraoral – low kVp, mAs & SIDs are used
extra-oral dental methods include:
• orthopantomograms (OPG), lateral cephalograms, cone beam CT – a CT method not planar x-ray
Mobile X-ray Units
mobile image intensifier (II)
• mainly used in operating theatres
• orthopaedic surgery, eg. closed and open # reductions
• vascular surgery
• general surgery
Risk of X-rays – more on this soon
• x-rays are ionising, they can potentially cause damage to human tissue
• ionising radiation in radiation therapy is use to kill some cancers
• risk vs benefit
• 2 important aspects in determining whether x-rays are to be used:
- justification – referrer or radiologist
- optimisation – the radiographer
X-ray Radiation Safety
3 basic principles of radiation safety:
• time • distance • shielding
