Refelexes
Are rapid automatic responses . we have control over them and there is little varaiblilty among the
responses. Are there for self-preservation and reducing inflammation that goes to the brain.
Describe a reflex arc
Understand the different methods of classifying reflexes
Explain the structure and function of muscle spindles and golgi tendon organs
Provide examples of visceral and somatic reflexes
Reflex arc
Spinal cord is promoting homestatsis. For reflex to occur we need stiumuls ( in image have pin) .
sensory receoopt = specific to stimulus ( in image is using a pan receptor) . action potential is
produced.
In integrating center = conducts impouls to the effector ( which is a muscle in diagram nd this muscle
will contract) .

Messages bend/bounce back on themselves – no
ascending up to brain. Go in and out. Reflexes occur with
and without awareness
Classifying reflexes
Different ways to classfy reflexes:
Development
- Innate reflexes = born with
- Acquired reflexes = we learn eg. Riding a bike , putting brakes on in a car
Processing sites
- Spinal reflex = information is processed in spinal cord itself
- Cranial reflex= information is porced in brain. Involves cranial nerves.eg. dilation of pupils,
blinking, swallowing
Nature of response
- Visceral reflex= are from sysems other than skeletal muscle, activate smooth muscle and
heart. Not skeletal muscle
- Somatic Reflex = invollantry skeletal muscle responses.
Complexity of circuit
