9808 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Cell Membrane, Action Potential, Chemical Synapse

21 views4 pages
Neurophysiology Lecture 2
7 - Describe the two types of refractory periods
Period of time after action potential whn we rest
before another action potential is produve
Absolute Rfracotry period
When =
What does it mean = even if have massive stimulus
tere is ni way you cant cuase a action potwetial
Why does it happen = due to inactivation of sodium channels
Relative Refractory Period
When =
What = harder tocuae action potential
Why = need a bigger stimulus to cuaase action potential. Will cause an action poetical with big
situmuls. Because sodium channels re closed and can reopen again
8 – What is a synapse , describe the 2 types
Synapse is region where communication with ouccur between neurons or neurons and muscle ect
Electrical Synapse
Action potential / electrical cuurent will conduct directly between the plasma membrane of pre and
post synaptic neuron through gap junctions. Ions travel directily trough channel into next neuron.
Happens quickly. Benfits – occurs quickly and coorodinates muscle contraction easily . not always
exicitatory stimulus
