Lecture Prejudice and Stereotyping
Defining:
Prejudge arrive at a conclusion before we have the evidence
Cognitive, affective and behavioural (can lead to discrimination)
Stereotypes can be both positive and negative to make sense of our social world
Stereotypes:
Kernel of truth
Idea thats allowed to grow
Limited evidence for gendered views (can not be proved empirically)
Behaviour interpreted through the lens of the stereotype (ignore the non-conforming
evidence)
People who dot ofor are su-typed (such as men crying)
Persisting of Stereotypes:
Explained away disconfirming evidence or attributed to luck
Often perpetuated through media
Face-ism how they are photographed and portrayed (men on face, woman on whole body)
Racism:
Assumptions led to the ide of eugenics

Attitude does not always predict behaviour
Aversive Racism:
Going out of way t prove they are not racist
Motivated to maintain a non-prejudice self-image
Fear appearing prejudiced
However subconsciously harbour negative feelings toward minorities
Discrimination leaks out in situations where behaviour can be justified as nonprejudiced
Rationalising of prejudice
People described in neutral or positive ways, people tend to show no racism
Described in negative ways, people are more hostile to members of minority legitimised
through the unpleasant traits
Fear of reporting discrimination
