PSYC1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Echoic Memory, Episodic Memory, Iconic Memory
Document Summary
Encoding - transform sensory stimuli into a form that can be placed in memory. Storage - effectively retaining information for later use. Retrieval - locating the item and using it (eg. recall vs recognition) General research strategy for the "verbal learning" approach to memory. Atkinson and shiffrin model (1968) - the 3 store model. Sensory register - storage system that registers (and briefly holds) information from the senses. Short term memory (stm) - intermediate storage system that briefly holds information prior to consolidation. Measure recall for varying length digit lists: 7+- 2. But it is possible to inflate this score using "chunking" - units of subjective organisation. Long term memory (ltm) - storage system that retains information for a long period of term. Consider free recall study: 15 words were called out and students were asked to write down as many as they could remember in any order. Primacy effect - memory best for things learnt first.
