Lecture 3 learning to play: socialisation into sport and physical. In sport, people learn not only skill based skills (how dribble a ball) but they also learn cultural skills (how to behave). Socialisation involves learning through contact with others what cultural behaviours are appropriate. Rugby league is a great example where players learn through socialisation that drinking, drugs and violence is acceptable within that culture (i. e. , there is a strong drinking culture in rugby league, which is linked to masculinity). Athletes are role models whether they like it or not these people are physically talented and because they are on tv so often they do act as role models for other people, particularly for children.
