EXMD2362 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Bone Density, Muscle Atrophy, Sarcopenia
Document Summary
Lecture 14 age is just a number: exercise prescription for older. By 2050, over 3. 5 million australians are expected to use aged care services each year. As people age, they develop more diseases, which reduces their daily function and ability to remain independent. Muscle decreases by 25% in cross-sectional area, resulting in less muscle strength. 1/3 of women over 75 cannot lift 4. 5kg. Affects 30% of people over 60 years. Decline in muscle health is the most predictable and preventable feature of normal ageing. With ageing, muscle mass decreases and fat mass increases. Osteoporosis loss of bone minerals at a faster rate than replacement. 80-90% of bmd is acquired by 20 years. After 50 years, women can lose 10% of bmd in 5 years. Exercise at 70-80% functional capacity or maximum strength. Bone load must exceed normal loading for an increase to result: caution: excessive loading can result in fatigue damage and failure.
