Almost all odontogenic infections caused by multiple bacteria: 60% by aerobes & anaerobes (35% anaerobes only, 5% aerobes only) Cervical fascia envelopes & divides structures of neck fibrous sheets allow mobility (muscles slide over each other) Primary spaces: buccal, canine, sublingual, submandibular, submental, vestibular. Secondary spaces: pterygomandibular, infratemporal, masseteric, lateral pharyngeal, superficial/deep temporal, retropharyngeal, prevertebral. Buccal space lies between buccinators muscle & overlying skin. May become involved via upper jaw or lower jaw molars. Can you feel lower border of mandible - if not submandibular. Sublingual/submandibular: independent drainage (gravity) extraorally, through skin, under ga. Rapidly progressing cellulitis of bilateral submandibular, sublingual & submental spaces.
