BIOM1050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cytoskeleton, Amphiphile, Hydrophile
Document Summary
Module 1 - a study of life and. Separates the outside environment from the elements of the cell. Contains molecules and structures that allow the cell to communicate with the outside. The membrane forms a barrier between inside and outside of the cell. Different chemical environments can exist on each side of the cell membrane. They allow certain molecules through and block the movement of the others. Some molecules are more able to cross the membrane than others. What determines if something diffuses across a membrane. Size ( small things are more likely to diffuse) Cytoskeleton: proteins in the cell membrane attach to cytoskeletal fibers and help define and maintain the shape of the cell. Extracellular matrix: in plant and animal tissues the cell membrane interacts with the cell membrane of adjacent cells. Defines and encloses the cell: the membrane allows the cell to control the internal pressure and concentration of intracellular components.
