Document Summary
Lecture 2: evolution and the domains of life. Taxonomy: the way to classify groups in biological systems. Aristotle developed "ladder of life" based on function and complexity of organisms. Carl linnaeus developed hierarchies based on morphological characteristics (colour, pattern, bones, organs etc. ) Aristotle and linnaeus - all forms of nature were fixed and could never change. Lamarckian evolution - organism"s traits could change throughout its lifetime through use and disuse, and that this new trait could easily be passed on to offspring (eg. giraffe"s long necks - continually stretching to reach high places) Flawed - an organism may change during its lifetime, but this is very difficult to pass down to offspring. Led to darwin"s theory of evolution by natural selection. Forelimbs look different but retain core homologous structure. Shared a common ancestor, different environmental conditions led to changes led to changes. After environmental change, a physical trait may give a survival advantage.
