ARCS2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Josiah Willard Gibbs, Atom, Homo Erectus
Document Summary
Study of materials (substances used for specific applications) Includes creation of new materials and study of existing materials. Josiah gibbs: materials science began as metallurgy, why is it important, tells us about process of manufacturing of objects, relative age of objects, provenance. Human agency in manufacturing: chemistry of objects varies depending on, availability of resources, human agency (choice, human agency causes chemistry to be different to source material -> provenance postulate doesn"t apply, extent of variation can determine recycling habits. Week 12 lecture: pyrotechnology, making and controlling fire, homo erectus, complex control of fire and oxygen levels, maintaining fire -> emergence of infrastructure like kilns, furnaces, ancient pyrotechnology in temp. range of 100-1550 degrees, ceramics and ceramic decay. Ceramic decay: porosity- bigger the pores, more vulnerable to environmental interaction, higher firing temperature = less porosity. Degree of degradation depends on: porosity, mineral composition, presence of a glaze, crazing of the glaze, moisture in the environment, diagenesis.
