Dominant feeder: Poaceae
- Family: Poaceae, then tribes, then genera
The Grass Tribes
1. Agrosteaeis temperate.
2. Andropogooneae (native), Eragrostideae and Paniceae(introduced) is tropical
Two big tribes: Andropogonae and Paniceae.
The Key Tropical Tribes
1. Andropogonae: India, Africa, Australia
2. Paniceae: Africa and South America.
3. Eragrostideae: Dry warm areas of Australia
(1 and 2 are big ones)
Grazing Resources in Native Pastures
- Native perennial, productive and palatable grasses (3Ps! Important for exam!): Decreasers
under grazing. Keep grazing they will decrease?
- Native perennial grasses (not preferred- wire grass): Increasers under grazing.
- Annual grasses: Increasers under grazing (Less preferred, grazer grass)
- Forbs (Small component but can be palatable)
- Shrubs (Mostly unpalatable, but some can be useful e.g. Mulga)
Classification of Native Pastures
- Appearance (tall or short)
- Vegetation characteristics (grasslands, woodlands, shrublands)
- Climate (humid to arid, further inland)
Native Pasture Communities of Northern Australia
- Ribbon grass, Native sorghum, Blady grass have low nutritional value.
- Wire grass and blue grass is good? Black spear also good but not as productive as blue grass.
- Mulga is palatable it low quality.
Subhumid Savanna: Brigalow Zone
- Not much production.
