ANCH2030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Amphora, Scheria, Votive Ship
Week 3 Lecture – Odysseus, Jason and ancient voyager Heroes
Ideas:
Internal and external struggles
Hubris – excessive pride or self-confidence
Aspects of a hero is to go on a quest or a sailing voyage
Doing something, getting something and coming back home again
Has a ‘nostos’ – a journey home
Views of Hesiod, Homer, Troy and Ithaka
Set just in the past – the age of heroes
Theogony – don’t mingle with gods and goddesses but some are the children of them
Time of the labouring heroes and legendary kings and queens
Traveling can make you a hero in the Greco-Roman tradition
Homer:
Odyssey 1.1-5
First words are ‘the man’ – changeable
Did not just see other places but experienced them
Trouble not just from people but from the sea
Odyssey 1-4:
Goes into an extended prequal
About son and wife and suitors and what his friends know/remember about him
Sets up Telemachus and Pen as a loyal wife
Also the journey from Ithaka to Nestor’s Pylos and the religious sacrifices made
Helen and Menelaus go to Sparta and tell of Troy and the Old Man of the Sea
Helen – seems embarrassed and sorrowful – drugs the whole party (also to a certain extent
a witch)
Menelaus – still a supporting character and kind of dumb – tells the story
Odyssey 5-8:
Brings Odysseus in
Sailing from Calypso’s island, navigates by the Pleiades and Orion, wrecked by Poseidon,
saved by Ino
