ANAT1005 Lecture 11: digestive 2
Document Summary
Last major organ in the gi tract, subdivided into 5 regions, cecum, appendix, colon, rectum, anal canal. Lies like an open rectangle in the borders of the abdominal cavity. The colon has 4 major parts (ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid) Absorbs water & electrolytes, most of the nutrients have been digested in the small intestine, the large 1 helps solidify things, stores faecal material until some1 is ready to defecate. Gastrolienal reflex- results in the accumulation of more chyme in the cecum and ascending colon. Cecum- receives chyme from ileum mostly intraperitoneal, sphincter prevents faeces from travelling back into ileum. Appendix- contains lymph nodes, neutralized pathogens, intraperitoneal, blind tube that opens into posterior medial wall of cecum, Transverse colon- origin hepatic flexure, transverse mesocolon, intraperitoneal. Sigmoid colon origin sigmoid flexure sigmoid mesocolon intraperitoneal. Rectum- retroperitoneal muscular tube stores faeces prior to pooping.
