PSYC3311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Diphthong, Vocal Folds, Phoneme
Week 2 lec 1
- vowels and diff l sounds
This is the last group of vowels, the diphthong -->
The vowels we talked about b4 was monophomes – tongue and lips placed in
particular position
Diphthongs has 2 phthongs – moving from one to another i a continuous movement.
eg i- moving from a to e. tongue moved upwards.
Ai is pronounced I
O – boat
Look at the sheet he gave us
Diphthongs are produced when the tongue and lips slide from one vowel position to
another.
/a/ + /ɪ/ → /aɪ/ (as in BITE)
/e/ + /ɪ/ → /eɪ/ (as in BAIT)
Now the consonants -->
Consonants – where there is clear obstruction to the air stream. – type of obstruction is
the manner of articulation
Consonants differ depending on (a) the way in which the obstruction is made, (b) the
place in the mouth where the obstruction is made, and (c) whether or not the vocal cords
are vibrating at the same time that the obstruction is made ("voicing").
Consonant is either voiced or unvoiced
Phonemes found in English, refer to chart
Across top- place of articulation
Place of articulation
Air is passing up through glotus and passing out through mouth or nose
"Stop" consonants are made when the airstream is completely blocked off and suddenly
released. --> plosives
e.g., bilabial, voiceless /p/ --> bilabial (air stream closed off by closing both lips)
bilabial voiced /b/
diff time when u release the air
alviola ridge, when tip of the tongue is placed on the ridge – t
uvelar – the hanging thing in the back of the mouth
velar voiceless /k/
-
global one is made like KRRRK , made back in glotus
Je (like in french) – vision has je in it
"Fricatives" are made when the air can pass continuously past the obstruction. -->
obstruction is not complete, air rubs against the obstruction
e.g., labiodental voiceless /f/ labiodental voiced /v/ palatal voiceless /š/ (as in SHIP)
palatal voiced /ž/ (as in TREASURE)

Type of obstruction is the manner of articulation. Air is passing up through glotus and passing out through mouth or nose. stop consonants are made when the airstream is completely blocked off and suddenly released. Je (like in french) vision has je in it. -> gaps between teeth, air passes through here.
