The reason for listening to music
- Adjustet of oes eotios e.g stress or fatigue by playing music is the most important
reason people report listening to music
- Soe liste to usi to e oed
- Some people use the term emotion interchangeably with these terms , which complicates
the study of emotion in music e.. affect, enjoyment, good quality, thrills, moved
- Formalism: while emotions is considered a highly significant aspect of music experience
today, this is not always the case
Defining emotion
What is emotion
- Coordinated, multicomponent system physiological (heart rate, skin conductance), display
patterns( posture and facial expressions), subjective feeling( I feel happy), cognitive
appraisal (to escape/approach)
Structure of emotion
o Discrete emotions
Basic fundamental for survival, universal and distinct (happy, sad, anger,
etc)
Secondary socially constructed, culturally dependent, arrives later in
individual development e.g. embarrassment, shame, guilt
o Dimensional
Combination of components eg. Arousal (activity) and valence
Can have dimensional equivalents e.g. happy, high arousal, positive valance,
etc
Function of emotion
- Focus attention, learning, communication,
- Probably adaptive but in some contexts can also be maladaptive eg. Showing anger in public
without a socially identifiable motive
How is emotion measure?
- Early studies physiological, recent neurophysiological (brain cap), some observational (e.g.
facial expression), but most are self-report
- Important work by Hevner 1930s
o Developed method of recording emotional responses
o Developed a checklist of emotional words for participants to use
o Manipulated music compositions to test if specific emotions could be recognised
- Other approaches : open ended responses
- Rating scales using dimensional models typically valence/arousal
