How to determine a scholarly reading, scholar
• Professor, Doctor
• Employed as a scholar
• University
• Who has an expertise
• See UNSW Library, Google Scholar
How to reference images
• Number them (fig 1, 2, etc)
• Include title, year it was made, artist, materials, publication (who has authority?
who took the photograph?)
Extra notes
• Basic facts, CONCRETE data you will be looking at (dot points need to be very clear)
• The direction it will take
• Modernism = Essential
Group work activity
• Two separate practitioners (20th and 21st century)
• Through the artists, new technologies make the work
• Possible Examples: Jon Rafman, Eric Siegel, Joan Jonas, Wolf Vostell
- Try to link artists
- Use examples that interest you
• What really defines technologies (new ways of doing things, materials, approaches,
abilities), new technologies to the time
• Modernism = Oil tubes, easels to paint outside
• 20th century artists have really influenced 21st century artists
• The question
- Examples should be provocative artists promoting new ways of seeing, artworks
using new technologies usig these exaples, it is evidet..
• The artists: Politics, say something about the word, through their contexts, we can
perceive things differently
• General ideas we would take from the scholarly texts
• DO NOT talk about existing technologies.
• New tech= less than 10 years old, new of the time eg photography, film, 3d printing,
green screen, television, 3D, virtual reality
• use examples of works from the right century
