Both personality and context need to be taken into account. Context plays a huge role in what people do, as shown by stanford and milgrim"s experiment. Divided cultures according to their ways of communicating, into: high context (much of the information is implicit). (collectivist)- traditional, low context (nearly everything is explicit)- modern. Culture is the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one group or category from people from others. Hofstede"s 6 dimensions of national cultures: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, masculinity/femininity, long/short term orientation, indulgences/restraint. The concept of self is defined as separate and independent from the group. The concept of self is defined only in relation to the group. The interests of the individual are given priority. The interests of the group are given priority. The independence and autonomy of the individual are emphasised. The interdependence and solidarity of people within the group are emphasised. The pursuit and fulfilment of individual goals are expected.
