Document Summary
80% of game households have more than one game device. On average, we"re playing for 89 minutes per day. 34% have used games at work to improve job knowledge. Casual gamers usually play for 2 10 minute blocks at a time. When asked why they are playing-the response is usually to kill time". What makes a great game: hard fun - generally needs to embody challenge. People tend to engage quite deeply and emotionally: people factor- we play to socialise, for competition and cooperation. How do we create these things: players- games are designed for players. Need to consider: target audience, number of players, roles of players, player interaction patterns: goals and objectives- every game needs to have a goal/objective. Arbitrary: game designer decides on how goals are defined. Non-trivial: a game must include some element of challenge. Objectives: should define what the player is trying to accomplish, challenging but achievable.
