Tutorial: week 2
Week 2 tutorial
Introduction exercise
• What is something you would like to convince others of
Assessment
• you can start broad in essays and work down or stick with a broader idea and
support it with evidence
Readings
- poetry can be persuasive
His coy mistress
• think of it as a persuasive piece
• How does it make use of persuasive devices to convince readers
• He is trying to persuade his mistress - very lust driven (is it really a love poem)
• Trying to convince her that time is short and that they may as well have some
fun before it’s over
• Butters her up in the middle before letting her know that it won’t matter in the
long run
• Uses the first stanza to establish his credibility
• It does not have an agent directly behind it - no one can argue with mortality
• Has a lot of coercion built into it
• Shifts in language
• Major premise is that you will die which leads to the argument that they should
be together due to the major premise
Passionate shepherd
• another love poem
• Who it is addressed to is clearly in the title
• He is trying to show her why she be with him due to what he can provide -
bribery
• Bribery changes behaviour but not attitude
• Gets straight to the point - more forward than the previous poem
Resume
• You wouldn’t start with the last line as with its position at the end you believe it
• Used car sales technique
• You are eased into the idea of why the last line is true
• This can cause dissonance as some people don’t care for avoiding pain
• These items are not causing pain - you are using them to cause pain
• The agent is passive
• Satirical
