BVB301 Lecture 8: BVB301 Week 8
Document Summary
Workshop 2, wk 2 case study: respiration and. Can cover distance, obstacles, less competition, defense, escaping weather, hunting: powered flight: flapping, highly energetically expensive, but on a cost per distance = efficient (allows them to take up more oxygen out of the air) Flying have 30% less energetic cost than running. Lung capacity: birds have lungs 30% smaller than other vertebrates (but 3x more efficient than dog) Alveoli: gas exchange, little air pockets that are wrapped via capillaries (increase surface area: oxygenated air comes in, picked up by red blood cells, and moves out to the body, co2 comes in, and goes out. Differences between different species: bird: long trachea, but small lung volume, but also have air sacs (this is how they contain constant flow of air in lungs (humans cannot do this)) Functions in birds (same as humans, but more efficient)
