Document Summary

Objectives: understand the components of the respiratory system, understand the physiology of respiration, understand the factors that control inhalation and exhalation. Functions of the respiratory system: gas exchange, thermoregulation, ph balance, vocalisation, olfaction, humidification and warming of inhaled air, water loss (in dogs, protection of respiratory surfaces (mucous production) Divided into: external respiration, exchange of o2 and co2 between atmosphere and tissues, exchange systems: o2 and co2 diffuse in/out of blood from/to air sacs, transported to/from. Involves the respiratory and circulatory systems tissues by blood and then diffuse in/out of tissues: cellular respiration, mitochondria use o2 to produce atp and produce co2 as a waste product. Pulmonary circulation: outflow from right ventricle (deoxygenated, alveolar capillaries for gas exchange, blood can be diverted preferentially to fully inflated lung, oxygenated blood flows back to the left atrium. Smooth muscle in pulmonary arteriole walls regulate blood flow. Inspiration: active process - enlarge volume of lungs, decrease pressure in lungs.
