Document Summary

For descriptive purposes the nervous system is divided into a number of subdivisions: the central nervous system (cns) Includes the brain and spinal cord, enclosed within the cranial cavity and the vertebral canal: the peripheral nervous system (pns) Includes 12 pairs of cranial nerves and their branches, 31 pairs of spinal nerves and their branches, and a variety of receptors. The peripheral nervous system provides input from sensory receptors to the central nervous system. Provides output from the cns to muscles and glands. Peripheral motor nerve fibres that supply smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands belong to a functional subdivision known as the autonomic nervous system (ans) The brain forms the largest part of the central nervous system. Consisting mainly of the cerebrum, diencephalon, brainstem and cerebellum. All parts of the central nervous system are supported by three membranes known as meninges. The meninges of the brain are three layers of protective tissue: dura mater.
