Support development of diverse ecosystems, provides important habitat: world health organization (who, 2002) estimates 1. 7 million people die each year due to polluted water, (sanitation and hygiene) Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse changes: pollutants, can be either synthetic (in the wrong place) or natural (in the wrong concentrations) Inputs over a wide area, not easily attributed to a single source (us epa: diffuse but cumulative effect is large eg. runoff from urban areas or agricultural fields. Transport of eroded sediment from land: physical effects and chemical effects. Physically alters light penetration and creates a barrier, siltation: can also transport organic and inorganic contaminants adsorbed on to sediments. Sources: human and animal waste, plant residue, atmospheric deposition, fertilizer runoff.
