Document Summary

Parietal and frontal cortex are activated in response to symbolic and non-symbolic number tasks. Human parietal and frontal areas associated with numbers: early fmri studies found a bilateral parietal and prefrontal activation. First functional imaging studies of mental arithmetic -> reproducible bilateral parietal and prefrontal activation: human studies predate the animal physiology due to late development of interest in number processing. Symbolic stimuli: the banks of the intra-parietal sulcus (ips) are consistently activated whenever adults compute simple comparison, addition, subtraction or multiplication with arabic numerals. Ips is activated even when a digit is detected among colours and letters obligatory processing. Ips is also activated by numbers presented in a range of culturally learned symbolic notations activated by numerals, spelled-out numbers or spoken number words: parietal activation occurs for an abstract, amodal representation of numbers. > ips later shows a rebound fmri response when the number is changed by a sufficient amount.
