Family vs. peers and environment: the family as a dynamic system. Importance of family resilience: four parenting styles authoritarian, rejecting, authoritative and permissive. Describes the parenting style, not the parent -> parenting style may be shifted based on the situation and the environment. Most parents lie along the continuum and do not fall neatly into any of the categories. Parenting style chosen based on desired outcome. As children grow older, pare(cid:374)ti(cid:374)g style (cid:374)eeds to (cid:271)e (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ged to a(cid:272)(cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)odate the (cid:272)hild"s (cid:374)eeds. Relationship with children built on trust -> children are less likely to engage in risky behaviour. Authoritative parenting (typically asian families: high self-confidence and good coping skills, engage in prosocial behaviour, high academic performance. Authoritarian parenting (typically african-american or asian families) Low self-confidence, low self-efficacy, cannot make decisions for themselves: poor social skills, poor academic performance. Permissive parenting (typically european families: more impulsive and engage in risky behaviour, poor academic performance. Rejecting-neglecting parenting: poor mental health, poor academic performance.
