PHYS30001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Impaired Glucose Tolerance, Gestational Diabetes, Glut4
Document Summary
Susceptibility of growth restricted females to impaired glucose tolerance. Islet & -cell mass by up to 70% Second hit = bad diet, male, lifestyle, stress. Gestational diabetes: occurs during pregnancy when body cannot cope with extra demand for insulin. Risk of diabetes in offspring: lifetime risk of diabetes in mother (if gestational diabetes doesn"t improve) - implications for 2nd pregnancy if she"s diabetic to start with. Adult -cell mass restored in growth restricted adult rats after 4 weeks of exercise. Unknown if this happens in humans, however lack of time remains the most commonly cited barrier to regular exercise participation. Improving our understanding of biochemical & molecular mechanisms in fetal programming makes it possible to identify biomarkers for detecting individuals at high risk of adult metabolic diseases. This may lead to the development of practical preventative & therapeutic strategies with significant benefits for cardiovascular health.
