What you use them for is inject them to the brain stem and nerve terminal will take it up and trasfer to the neuronal cell body on the right you can see red and green and yellow neuonrs. What this type of study did is look at spinal projections from lamina 1 to the rbain stem compared to the thalamus there are 400 neurons in the lumbar region, the outpiuts werent going to the thalamus. When we consider fear response the major brain response is the amygdala complex which has two parts which is the cortical and central amygda part cortical receives input and central is output looking at these regions.
