NEUR30002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Depolarization, Serotonin, Ouabain
Document Summary
What isbeing mesured is the difference inside the cell and the bath outside of the cell. Na/k atpase and the ca atpase actively works to move the na and k against its concentration gradient and so moving k outside to inside and na from inside to out. Na/k is a major contributor to the ion imbalance ions are moved against their concentration gradient via a comformational change of the protein. K has a strong drive to move out of the cell along its conc gradient. Within the selectivtiy pore, the oxygen molecules are spaced identically to the spacing of the oxygen molecule in the water that forms the cloud around the k ion. Na is not relaxed in this way and so na and ca are rejected from this channel. Meaning they dont die but they start doing this weird dance.
