Document Summary

Genes are given names based on the phenotype exhibited when they are mutated. eg. mutants unable to grow on galactose as a carbon source are denoted as gal mutants. The wild type allele of the gala gene is denoted gala+ and a mutant allele may be gala- or gala1. eg. mutants which are unable to grow in the absence of histidine are denoted his mutants. The wild type allele of the hisb gene is denoted hisb+ and a mutant allele may be hisb- or hisb12. eg. mutants which are resistant to the antibiotic ampicillin are ampr and sensitive strains (wild type) are amps. Bacterial "crosses" = gene transfer between bacterial strains. A donor provides genetic material to a recipient. Experimentally, in order to simplify the experiments, the donor is eliminated (selected against) after transfer so we are scoring the recipients only.
