Recognize the presence of outer and inner mitochondrial membrane and matrix. Mitochondria evolved from alpha- proteobacteria: larger anaerobic bacteria ate alpha- proteobacteria endosymbiosis. Reaction 1: the pdh complex: critical regulator of the krebs cycle. Can be considered the 1st control point of the citric acid cycle. It is a multi- enzyme complex, involving 3 subunits that carry out different reactions to change pyruvate to acetyl coa. G" = -33. 4k=kj/mol: b group vitamins act as cofactors and help with the reaction, the reaction is controlled by allosteric modulators either increase/ decrease the activity. Don"t memorize the reaction network (just want to show how important b group vitamins are in converting pyruvate to acetyl coa). The key thing is knowing which enzyme does what and in which reaction and also the free energy (in terms of the condition in the cell and how does the reactions proceed). The purpose is to make nadh, fadh2, and a little atp.
