ANAT30008 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Lumbar Plexus, Thoracolumbar Fascia, Double Fold (Paper Testing)
Document Summary
* the abdomen is the region between the thorax superiorly and the pelvis inferiorly. * there are layers of skeletal muscle that line the abdominal walls and these also assist in respiration because they attach to the thoracic cage. Additionally, also by contracting and increasing intra- abdominal pressure, these muscles also facilitate things like urination, defecation and childbirth (the evacuation processes). * the abdominal cavity is lined by peritoneum which is a single layer of serous membrane. * this abdominal cavity is continuous with the pelvic cavity there is nothing separating the abdominal cavity from the pelvic cavity (unlike the thorax and abdomen which is separated by the diaphragm). * the peritoneal lined abdominal cavity/abdominopelvic cavity contains visceral structures. The visceral structures that lie within the abdominal cavity are components of the gastrointestinal tract, the urinary system and also the spleen. Omentum = a fold of peritoneum connecting the stomach with other abdominal organs.
