ANAT20006 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Spinal Canal, Spinal Nerve, Outer Ear
Document Summary
There are 5 main regions of the vertebral column: Sacrum (5 fused vertebrae = 1 whole) Only 1 curve in foetus called the foetal curve or primary curve (c shaped) The secondary curves (lordotic curve) in the cervical and lumbar regions. These curves occur due to the strengthening of surrounding muscles as humans begin to move around etc in their environment. Note: different sections of vertebra look different and have different functions however we will just look at a lumbar section today as a base/model for the others. The vertebral body is a thick portion of bone responsible for weight bearing. The epiphyseal ring is on the outside here and is smoother than the inner portion. The vertebral arch hangs off the back and is responsible for protection. These sections are shaped to allow for the vertebral foramen (stacking up) and canal (later in lecture) There are 3 processes (projections/sections) of the arch:
