Pharynx and pharyngeal pouches: prof colin anderson c. anderson@unimelb. edu. au embryo still has prominent pharyngeal arches not gills but have some of the structures of gills. Jaws, bloo vessles, muscles of mastication and face, middle ear, eustachian tube, Bottom right we have a fishy ancestor who did have gills and they had bony supports. The lump coming out is the heart and above is the developing brain. They are located where at one stage we did have gills and associated muscles and nerves. They are modified to form a who range of structures to form the head and neck. The very front supporting brachial artery is modified to be the upper and lower jaws. All the succeeding structures are now modified in us to be a whole range of structures. Gives rise to a number of structures. They come from the endoderm lining this part of the gut. Pharyngeal arches come from the wall of the foregut.
