LECTURE 26
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM (2)
ANATOMY OF GREY VESSELS
AORTA
(1) Pulmonary trunk is the vein taking off
from right ventricle, carrying venous blood to
send to the lungs via the pulmonary artery.
Aorta is an artery taking off from the left
ventricle.
Runs continuously from the thorax to the
abdomen. Thoracic aorta refers to bit from
thorax to abdomen. Below this is abdominal
aorta.
The thoracic aorta is divided into 3 parts:
1. Ascending aorta
2. Aortic arch: arches superiorly,
posteriorly and to the left, at the level the
manubrial/sternal junction, T4/5.
3. Descending (thoracic) aorta.
ASCENDING AORTA
(2) Aortic arch: arches anterior and over the
bifurcation of the trachea.
Arch over the left lung root.
Descending aorta runs posterior to the left lung root.
Groove above left lung groove
(3) Initially runs on left and approaches midline and
becomes abdominal aorta. Left of vertebral column.
(4) Ascending aorta gives rise to 2 branches, 2 coronary
arteries.
Origins of coronary arteries:
Proximal part of ascending aorta
Immediately superior to aortic valves.

Document Summary

Aorta: (1) pulmonary trunk is the vein taking off from right ventricle, carrying venous blood to send to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. Aorta is an artery taking off from the left ventricle: runs continuously from the thorax to the abdomen. Thoracic aorta refers to bit from thorax to abdomen. Below this is abdominal aorta: the thoracic aorta is divided into 3 parts, 1. Aortic arch: arches superiorly, posteriorly and to the left, at the level the manubrial/sternal junction, t4/5: 3. Left of vertebral column: (4) ascending aorta gives rise to 2 branches, 2 coronary arteries, origins of coronary arteries, proximal part of ascending aorta, immediately superior to aortic valves. Coronary arteries: (5) coronary arteries arise on the right and left of ascending aorta. There are 2 main branches: the right coronary artery, running between the right atria appendage and the right side of pulmonary trunk, and the left coronary artery: sa and av node located within right atrium.
