When is what we may term bullying not bullying. * 50% australian students bullied sometime over school life. * 30% of yr 4 report bullying then increases in primary/secondary transition. * more prominent in the middle school in years 7-10. * decreases to 10% for yrs 11 and 12. * effects - sleep disturbances, bed wetting, headaches, depression, loneliness, suicide. * come from lower - mid or higher socio economic background. * animal abuse and bullying link 20% of 12-16 yr olds. * hostile: aggression to inflict intentional harm with a threat. * overt: carries out the threat by attacking physically. * relational: verbal attacks (more predominant in females) * reactive: the bully is attacked back and threatened. * proactive: very intentional and a void of emotion, satisfying. * capacity to reflect on one"s own thoughts and to distinguish them from other people"s thoughts or. * ability to vicariously experience the emotions of another person develops at an early age.
