Student Learning and Problem Solving
What is a problem?
Using existing knowledge and skills to address an unanswered question or
troubling situation
A situation where you need to reach a goal and must find a solution
Problem solving is an opening up of new means
Schunk well structured and ill (poorly) structured problem solutions
Clear unclear starting point
Clear unclear path to solution
Has no strategy
Can cannot solve
Schemas (construct or a procedure) are important for problem solving
Schemas within schemas
A procedure for solving a maze etc.
Important for human function
Automaticity frees up tiny working memory (knowing doubling strategy)
o Solving an identical maze a number of times results in an automated
schema for that particular maze
o Important for rapid processing
Do we need general skills or domain skills to solve problems?
Arguments for both sides through Kail and Hall, 1999
o To solve maths problems need strategies for basic operations e.g.
plus and minus as well as reading skills
General problem solving models:
o Similarities the use of a general problem solving procedure and a
high degree of metacognitive monitoring
Many models but most can be sumamrised into a 5 stage sequence (Bransford and
Stein, 1993)
Identify the problem
Define and represent the problem
o Focus attention/understand words/whole problem (takes time)
Explore a possible solution strategy
o Can be highly structured (use an algorithm/rule that works)
o If rules do not work, use heuristic
Trial and error
Means ends analysis working backwards (reducing distance
between initial state and the goal by breaking into sub goals
and analyzing progress)
Poor problem solvers tend to use trial and error or a crude form
of MEA
Anticipating/act upon the strategy (implement)
o Gives opportunity for metacognition, self-reflection and self-regulation
o Estimate answer by double checking
