There is a growing interest in the commercial potential of public science. Public research organisations are engaging in academic enterprise (systematic efforts to strengthen the short-term commercial value of their research) The increasing focus on enterprise in the academia may have unintended effects on the long-term progress of science (efficiency and division of labour) Tendency to undertake research with short-term commercial potential. Enterprise appears to be positively related to traditional academic endeavours. Enterprise also brings publication delays and restrictions on the dissemination of public research. There is no conclusive evidence that industry involvement (academic patenting/commercialisation activities) are associated with increasing levels of applied research. No indications of a negative effect on basic research. No indication of a negative impact of university-industry collaboration. Academic enterprise might involve a shift towards either a more applied research or more commercially oriented research in academia.
