Week 6: the cloud, network and cloud technology. Why is the cloud the future for most organisations. The cloud: elastic leasing of pooled computer resources over the internet. Computing resources leased can be increased or decreased dynamically. Different organisations share the same hardware through virtualisation. A way of designing computer programs that can be flexibly combined. Main factors that have made cloud- based hosting advantageous: Processors, data communication, and data storage are so cheap that they are nearly free. Enables the near instantaneous creation of a new virtual machine. Internet-based standards enable cloud-hosting vendors to provide processing capabilities in flexible, yet standardised ways. How do organisations use the cloud: cloud services from cloud vendors, content delivery networks from cloud vendors. Content delivery networks from cloud vendors (cdn) Information system that stores user data in many geographical locations and makes that data available on demand. Used to store and deliver content that seldom changes.
