Big gap between what author wants you to get out of it and what the narrator is telling you to be truth. Have to look out for the clues: author and narrator are sometimes quite aligned. Author is actually asking you to judge the character: you can"t trust the narrator. Need to work out what implied author wants you to get out of it. Clearly there are advantages, besides wilful obscurity, in handing narrative responsibility over to an untrustworthy narrator. One important advantage in such narratives is that narration itself its difficulties, its liability to be subverted by one"s own.
