Types of processing: mainframe processing, where everything was done in a central computer, point-to-point/multi-drop networks to distribute processing loads, lan, bridged networks, router networks. Clients generally pull data from different parts of a network. A multi-drop network has multiple parts along its cable. A multi-drop segment is a part of the cable where multiple devices may interact at the same time. You can bridge segments to make a larger network. You can use a router to connect parts of a network as well. A packet can be thought of like the postal service, where items of various sizes can be passed between multiple pairs of end-points over a network. To use this, everything must be broken into packets, which contain a header (containing metadata) and a body/payload (which contains the data) Metadata is data about data, such as file size and file format.
