Bridge or switch partitions lan into separate collision domains. But broadcast domain is whole lan connected by bridge or switch. Each port on switch represents separate collision domain. Must arbitrate medium access in collision domain (csma/cd) Notes reach each other via broadcast at data link layer. Backbones are also hierarchical (backbones of backbones) notes: Each layer encapsulates information from the layer above. At any point, we can strip off some of the encapsulation and then repackage the information. This is what the components we will be looking at do. The application is sending a gift to a friend. The transport is by packaging the gift in a box. The box is carried in a shipping container, this is like the network packet. It can go from place to place by different means. A truck represents on e data link frame format, that works on the road physical network. A ship is another data link frame, that travels on the ocean.
