SYNAETHEASIA
WHAT IS SYNAESTHESIA?
• Described as a mixing of sensations
• An ordinary sound can have a taste or smell attached to it
• Not a disorder because it doe not interfere with life
• Many different types
o Vivid colours attached to letters
o Graphing colours synaesthesia
o Smells giving a visual experience (rare)
• Prevalence – 0.05-4%
• Gender bias? – 2-6 females for every 1 male
• Familiarity – higher prevalence among biological relatives
TYPES OF SYNAESTHESIA
• In theory, every sense could be involved:
• Sound ->
o Vision
o Touch
o Smell
o Proprioception
• Vision ->
o Sound
o Touch
o Smell
o Proprioception
etc...
• Some types are more common than others.
Less commonly:
• Colours from pain
• Non-colour experiences such as:
o Synaesthetic smells, tastes, touch.
GRAPHEME-COLOUR SYNAESTHETES
• Seeing colours with numbers or letters.
• Seeing 4 as the colour red.
• Aware that when reading it's in black and white, but also sees colours for the letters and
symbols.
• Tuesday is yellow, not seeing it anywhere but just having an awareness of yellow in the
word.
AUDITORY-VISUAL, TOUCH-COLOUR, TIME-SPACE, MIRROR-TOUCH
• "Eery soud has a olour…people hittig golf alls at the driig rage, eah of their shots
produces a slightly different shade of colour."
