Document Summary

13th march 2018: lecture seven nomenclature: naming/nomenclature of organic compounds: In the family of hydrocarbons (contains only c and h) It is known as a saturated hydrocarbon (no more can be added) Compounds with c-c single bonds and c-h single bonds only. Contain 4 single bonds around each carbon atom with tetrahedral geometry. Have the same molecular formula (same numbers and kinds of atoms) but differ in the way the atoms are arranged. If a hydrogen atom is removed from an alkane, the partial structure remaining is called an alkyl group. An alkyl group is named by replacing the (cid:494)ane(cid:495) ending of alkane with (cid:494)yl(cid:495) ending. Specify each alkyl group by position number. If more than 1 different alkyl group, name alphabetically. If more than 1 alkyl group of the same type use prefix di, tri : combine substituent name (s) as the prefix, to the name of the parent alkane.
